Black storytellers and other marginalized communities have historically faced oppression, censorship, racism, sexism, and cultural appropriation —— if not outright theft, just to mention a few.

Many of those same threats remain today and IDENTIFYING THEM IN THE MEDIA that we consume continues to be an ongoing challenge, mainly because the tactics that were once easy to identify have become ever more complex, obscured, and radicalized; ploys of a propagandist media apparatus that seeks to undermine Black independent thought, artistry, and resistance to HOSTILE threats against our own CULTURE.

This is why THE SETLIFE PROJECT grounds the formation of our youth in the film industry with a comprehensive examination of the past, drawing parallels between historic challenges once thought to be defeated forever in Hollywood, with the modern day tactics of governmental, corporate, and technological institutions still invested in diminishing the power and revolutionary scope of Black artists.

Gaining the knowledge, insight, and education necessary to identify these challenges and face them head-on should be a fundamental goal for every filmmaker.
